The African equines Zebra are best known for alternate white and black stripes on its body. Due to this magnificent design, zebras are considered to be among the most dominant mammals and are portrayed in various films and artwork. Zebras have elongated faces, slender legs for running and climbing, broad teeth for tearing the leaves and plant matter, and tufted tails supported by barrel-chested bodies. Zebra have a set of molars that are well adapted to grinding and incisors that are pointed enough to pierce down the pieces of leaf blades.

Generally, the belly region of zebras is white, and the undercoat is dark black when unstriped. Young zebras are called foals, and it is reported that foals are born without stripes and in brown color. With time, the brown color fades away, and black stripes appear. It is reported that melanistic zebras contain dark stripes on the torso and legs, but the concentration of dark ties in the two regions varies from one another. Additionally, these stripes help in protection against potential predators like lions, cheetahs, and tigers who actively hunt for food during the night.

The thermoregulatory hypothesis suggests that these alternate black and white stripes help in keeping the body temperature of zebra normal. One hypothesis called the fly protection hypothesis suggests that these alternate stripes provide full protection against the attack of house flies and other biting flies as this pattern deters flies. It is reported that zebras usually migrate to locations where water is present abundantly.
