The realization that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild could be my favorite Zelda experience of all-time hit me like lightening – essentially. A big storm swept in surprise while I was sprinting across Hyrule’s beautiful green meadows. A high breeze disturbed the long grass as torrential rain started to fall, and I could hear the crash of lightening in the background. The piercing sound became louder and louder until zap! A bolt shocked me and killed me. The same thing happened every time I rebooted. I couldn’t figure out why the thunderbolt was aimed at me, the defenseless hero, until I noticed my spears and shields were forged of metal. I had managed to successfully make it through the thunderstorm without the steel.

Breath of the Wild adds something to the franchise that has been absent for years: big shock. Most modern Zelda escapades have become predictable, adhering to a rigorous and established format that provides nostalgia and continuity but leaving little space for huge or little breakthroughs. Breath of the Wild is more transparent and intuitive than its predecessors, allowing you to learn things via exploration, such as how thunderbolt works. It isn’t always as well-crafted and theatrical as previous Zelda games, however the uncertainty gives it the sensation of a genuine adventure, where you’re forging your own route rather than striking your targets and sticking to the narrative.

Breath of the Wild is the largest Zelda game ever, with a gigantic immersive experience packed with plenty to do that I expect most players — including those who finish the main plot — would miss significant sections of the globe. The size might have been intimidating, but the thrill of exploration and the pleasure of choosing your own path make it welcome. I wish to visit locations that I have yet to visit. I wish to discover new powers and mysteries.
