Swan are large, white aquatic birds closely related to ducks and geese and come from the family Anatidae. Swans living in the Northern Hemisphere are covered with white plumage, whereas swans present in the Southern Hemisphere are covered with a mixture of white and black plumage. Some swans, like Australian swans, are covered by black plumage except for white flight wings. Swans are considered to be the largest known birds on Earth. The legs of the swans are greyish, whereas the color of the bill varies from one another. Most swans possess a fleshy structure on the upper side of the bill. This fleshy structure is known as a knob which is dominant in female members but is present in both sexes.

Swans can feed on land and in water. Swans obtain a considerable amount of energy from plant matter. However, a bunch of swans obtains energy by consuming animal matter – mostly small aquatic animals present in the deep sea. The main diet components of swans include stems, tubers, roots, and leaves of completely and partially submerged aquatic plants. The food in the water is extracted by dabbling or up-ending. The most interesting thing associated with swans is that they make love relationships for life. It is reported that before hitting puberty, swans become sexually mature and start looking for their partner. Once they find a partner, they stay together till their demise.

For keeping the babies protected, swans construct long-lasting nests. It is seen that both members take part in the construction of nests, and nests are usually constructed near the water on the ground so that swans can get the water when needed. Additionally, male swans participate in incubating eggs and taking care of young ones until they become completely independent of their parents. This type of bond is quite rare in birds.
