When his parents, C.C. and Marilyn Batson, deceased while he was young, Billy Batson becoming an orphan. Billy grew cold and harsh to most individuals after his parents died. He moved from foster family to foster home, becoming selfish and callous, until he ended himself in a Philadelphia orphanage. Billy was entrusted in the custody of Victor and Rosa Vasquez, both former foster kids who had previously fostered a number of youngsters, when he was fifteen years old. Billy moved in with the Vazquezes, where he met Mary, Freddy, Eugene, Pedro, and Darla, his new foster siblings. Billy was uninterested in interacting with the other kids and rebuffed their efforts to get close to them. Nevertheless, the next day, Billy stepped in to protect his brothers from bullies who were harassing them at school. He slipped out of the home that night and was pursued by Freddy, so the boys decided to steal the bullies’ father’s automobile.

Billy was apprehended and managed to flee the subway station on an underground railway. The train became a portal to the Rock of Eternity, where Billy encountered the Wizard. The Wizard looked into the boy’s soul and saw that he was not flawless. When he informed him, Billy became upset, accusing him of thinking that everyone is perfectly excellent and without imperfections. Billy’s perspective was accepted by the Wizard, and he peered further into his soul. The Wizard conferred his power onto Billy after observing all of Billy’s wonderful deeds. He could change into Shazam, the champion, and wield the Living Lightning with a word. The Wizard died after giving Billy all of his power.

Billy’s origin was originally set to coincide with the ongoing Justice League series; but, after the multiple cosmic upheavals that culminated in Death Metal, allusions to pre-flashpoint events that he took part in would appear to rule that out. Billy looks a lot like Black Adam’s nephew, Aman, who died a few years ago.
