Sailor Moon is a Japanese animation series designed and penned down by Japanese manga artist, writer and entertainer Naoko Takeuchi. From 1991 to 1997, the anime was serialised in eighteen volumes in Nakayoshi. The central character of the series is a school going girl named Usagi Tsukino. Usagi Tsukino converts herself into Sailor Moon and instructs a group of commanders known as Sailor Soldiers. Sailor Soldiers are instructed to protect magical crystals known as Legendary Silver Crystal. The transformation of Tsukino into Sailor Moon is assisted by her black cat named Luna.

Luna gifts Tsukion a magic brooch that can be manipulated to convert oneself into Sailor Moon. In the anime, Sailor Moon is depicted as a courageous soldier who is ready to sacrifice their life for the benefit and welfare of humanity and who is willing to face any hardship to prevent the planet from the arrival of evil creatures. In the first part, Sailors Soldiers wage war against the Dark Kingdom. The dark Kingdom is led by Queen Metaria, who is evil and is searching for lost Silver Crystal. Toei Animation is involved in the adaptation of manga into anime. Animation series was broadcasted on Japan national television from 1992 to 1997. Three short films and a live television animation were featured by Toei Animation based on the anime Sailors Moon. The live television adaptation was broadcasted from 2003 to 2004 under Pretty Guardian Sailors Moon. The upgraded version of Japanese anime was published in 2014 under Sailor Moon Crystal.

Kodansha Comics and Random House Australia issued a license to release the manga in North America and New Zealand, and Australia, respectively. The permit for the release and distribution of anime in the English version was issued by Madman Entertainment and Viz Media in Australia, New Zealand, and North America. Sailors Moon collected positive responses, praises and appreciation for sensational and stupendous humour and professional character development. Sailors Moon is considered to be the best-selling shojo manga. More than 30 million copies of the manga have been sold within a shorter span.
