One of the most prominent characteristics of parrots is the presence of a dark-colored bill, which is slightly curved and pointed downwards. This curved bill has no attachment to the skull, so parrots can move it around without putting much effort. The inner side of the keratinized bill is surrounded by touch receptors which are collectively called bill tip organs. These organs locate the food particles in the bill so that the upper mandible can put cracking force upon the food particles. Zygodactyl feet are used by parrots for making swings and for climbing tree branches.

The most common color of plumage in parrots is green. However, most parrots do have red, blue, or yellow plumage, depending on the type of species. It is reported that parrots have a sharp sense of vision, and they can locate things behind them even without looking back or tilting their head in a backward position. All the parrots extract a major portion of energy by feeding on buds, pollen grains, nectar, flowers, leaves, and in most cases on small crustaceans and arthropods. The most favorite feeding item for parrots is seeds, and it is seen that parrots put great effort into taking off the seed coat before ingesting it. The major reason for taking off the seed coat is its poisonous nature.

Parrots make lifelong bonds with their partners, and they remain close to each other throughout the year, even when breeding season is over. Parrots do not mark territories and home ranges. The green-colored parrots are known best for their sharp minds, fully developed nervous systems, and instinctive ability to imitate human beings. Parrots are intelligent birds, and no one can deny this fact. The population of wild parrots is diminishing day by day because of habitat destruction, hunting, competition with the introduced or invasive species, and humans’ interest in caging parrots.
