Have you ever wanted to see an anime about a parasitic entity that takes control of the main protagonist’s hand and transforms it into various swords and other objects? I didn’t think I’d like it, but Netflix’s English-dubbed version of “Parasyte: The Maxim” proved me wrong. Shinichi Izumi (Adam Gibbs), a 17-year-old set to graduate from high school in the tranquil suburb of Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan, is the subject of the series. Small wormlike monsters known as parasites come on Earth one night, usually consuming the victims’ brains before taking over their bodies; however, when one of these creatures attempts to do this to Shinichi, it is forced to take over his hand instead. Shinichi is a bit freaked out when his hand starts talking to him, complete with eyes and a mouth, and I agree, it’s a little scary at first.

His parasite quickly realizes that it cannot exist without Shinichi’s nutrition and begins a symbiotic bond with him. Shinichi gives him the name Migi (Brittney Karbowski), and their relationship ranges from cooperative and extremely beneficial when they can focus on a common goal, such as tracking down a rogue member of Migi’s kind, to combative, as Migi is devoid of human emotion and his only goal is to survive. He only stays with Shinichi because he knows he has a higher chance of survival with him, while he usually prefers to side with his own kind.

Other parasites, particularly those that take over their hosts’ brains, soon become pests, which may have something to do with the fact that they kill their hosts by effectively eating and replacing the portion of the body with which they combine. These parasites have an insatiable need to consume people, even though it is entirely instinctive and not biologically necessary, since other parasites of similar sort may survive on human food. Nonetheless, they evolve hunting habits and even parasite communities in which they agree on “community dining halls” where they may devour people.
