Moose is also known as elk in many Asian countries. Moose is a deer-like mammal that is distributed in North and Central America. Like other family members of the deer family, moose are best known for their broad antlers. Moose uses these enormous antlers to attract female members and for fighting with male competitors. Antlers form a major part of sexual selection in moose, and it is reported that the heavier the antlers are, the more powerful moose are. As the winter approaches, male members of the moose family shed their antlers so that they can preserve the maximum amount of energy for winter. As the spring sets in, a new set of antlers starts to regrow naturally. The energy needed for the re-growth of antlers is provided by the network of blood vessels passing through the skull.

Moose contains a pair of hooves on keratinized ends of the feet. The fur of moose contains two layers of hair: the upper layer contains long, thin guard hair, whereas the inner layer contains thick, insulating hair. It is studied that the long outer hair of moose is hollow and is fully occupied with air for proper insulation. Female and male members of the moose family contain a bell-like structure known as dewlap under the chin. Although, scientists could not give any explanation of the exact function of dewlap. Though, some scientists have agreed that this bell-like structure plays a pivotal role in maintaining the body temperature of moose.

The major portion of the energy is obtained by feeding upon diverse groups of plants and leaves, and it is reported that moose need approximately 9700 calories a day to maintain their healthy body weight. For chopping woody vegetation, moose have a set of 8 incisors on the lower jaw, whereas they have no teeth in the upper jaw. Further chopping is facilitated by a broad tongue and gums.
