Manatees are famously known as sea cows because they spend their entire lives in a deep sea and feed on plant sources present around. These herbivorous aquatic mammals range in size from 4 to 4.5 meters, and their body weight is roughly 500 kilograms. An interesting fact about manatees is that they only have 6 teeth in their jaws at a recorded time. This is because manatees continuously shed older teeth and replace them with new ones plus, the teeth of manatees are not fully differentiated into premolars or molars, and they lack canines and incisors.

Another striking feature of manatees is that they possess only six cervical vertebrates. The large paddle-shaped tail facilitates their movement in salty water. Manatees spend approximately 12 hours of a day in a deep sleep, and the rest of the hours are spent foraging and marking territories. It is reported that manatees mate only once a year, and another year is spent in gestation. For 12 to 18 months, the parent manatee takes care of the young one and provides food and shelter to the growing manatee before it becomes mature and independent. After becoming independent, manatees spend a solitary life. Studies related to manatees have depicted that manatees possess a marvelous long-term memory and are best at solving puzzles and learning different paths.

It is reported that the number of manatees is gradually dominating, and one of the leading causes of this gradual decrease is the number of deaths resulting from human interventions like atrocious collisions with propellers of ships and boats, plus the devastation of their natural homes has caused many deaths. Bodies of rescued manatees were found covered with more than 50 scars from propeller blades. Apart from that, natural death causes of manatees include cardiovascular or respiratory disorders, brutal attacks by crocodiles, and unimaginable changes in temperature.
