Sea jellies or jellyfish refers to a group of sea creatures that are either freely floating in the sea or are completely immobile (in this case, one end of the body is attached to a substratum for additional balance and support). Jellyfish is best known for numerous fringe-like structures called tentacles supported by an umbrella-shaped bell. One of the fascinating things about jellyfish is that their stinging tentacles can damage human beings and fellow sea creatures, as thousands of swimmers had reported that they were attacked by jellyfish when they were swimming in the water.

The jellyfish life cycle is quite complex as it comprises asexual and sexual stages. The sexual stage usually involves the formation of Medusa. The egg, which is fertilized by the male reproductive cells called sperm, is converted into planulae larva, which is then transformed into polyps. The bud stage is followed by the ephyrae stage, which is then followed by an adult stage. During the ephyrae stage, ephyrae are formed, whereas, during the adult stage, adult medusae are formed. In a variety of jellyfish, some stages never occur, or some stages take longer than normal time to complete. Spawning takes place after the establishment of the adult stage, and it is reported that in the presence of enough food, jellyfish spawn daily, with light being the limiting factor for spawning to occur. Fertilization may be internal or external depending upon the species.

In internal fertilization, sperm reaches the egg by passing through the mouth of the female members, whereas, in external fertilization, eggs are released into the water. In most countries, jellyfish are consumed by non-vegetarians as a rich protein meal. However, it is reported that jellyfish contain little energy. Before eating jellyfish, it is pressed forcefully to ejaculate an extra amount of stored water, and then salt is sprinkled over it to make it more delicious.
