The medium-sized, dog-like mammals called foxes are omnivorous, meaning that they can attain nutrients and energy from animals and plants matter alike. Fox possesses a pair of triangular, upright ears that are set above the head, and they possess elongated snouts which are used for locating food items. The name is extracted from the Ancient English word, which means thick hair or fluffy hair, and it is because their tail comprises long, thick hair. Foxes are comparatively smaller in size as compared to Raccoon dogs, whereas their body is quite larger than wolves, jackals, and other members of the Canidae family.

One of the most popular foxes is the red fox which is roughly 4 to 8 kilograms in weight, and the smallest one is the fennec fox which is roughly 1 to 2 kilograms in weight. These dog-like creatures are digitigrade, which means that they largely depend on their toes for walking around. Fox contains a retractable claw, two large black eyes, and dark black whiskers or vibrissae, which help in maintaining balance. One of the fox species, Fennec Foxes, is mostly found in arid environments like deserts which is why their body is equipped with smaller and thicker hair, so that body temperature is kept low. In comparison, Arctic Foxes are loaded with bundles of thick, white hair to keep the body temperature high. Arctic foxes have shorter limbs and a pair of outwardly situated triangular ears for moving around.

Foxes mostly prefer to spend their lives in smaller groups, but some species spend their life alone, for example, the arctic fox. It is estimated that foxes can live up to 10 years in the wild (only if surrounding conditions are favorable). Male foxes remain sexually active for most of the year with their testes covered in the scrotum and remain inside the scrotum forever. When eggs become fertilized, they undergo gestation time which is around 52 to 52 days.
