The scientific name for a ferret is Mustela furo which is known best for its small size and domestic characters. Ferret is a part of the Mustelidae family. The name of these little domesticated creatures is derived from the Latin word “Furittus.” Furittus in Latin means small thief. The major reason for giving ferrets this name is because they take away small items with them from their surroundings. A normal adult female and male ferret are known as jill and hob, respectively, whereas a neutered female and male are known as sprite and gib. A ferret who has spent one year of his life is known as a kit, and many ferrets are known by their collective noun business or busyness. The average length of a fully developed ferret is around 20 inches. The body of the ferret is known for its slenderness and delicacy.

At a time, a female ferret can give birth to 4 to 8 litter without becoming sick, and the gestation period is usually completed within a month and a half. Ferrets are usually crepuscular, which means that they become most active at the onset of dawn and dusk. Otherwise, they spend most of their day in a deep sleep – 12 to 14 hours are spared for deep sleep a day. Ferrets are fun-loving animals as they need at least an hour or two to spend time with each other and explore the things present around them. Ferrets do not adore loneliness.

They love to be surrounded by animals who resemble them in their behavior and characters. When ferrets become overly scared, stunned, or excited, they release a substance from the anal gland. The smell of this secreted substance is not much potent and diffuses after some time. It is reported that people who sell ferrets remove this gland before selling the ferrets out.
