The donkey is one of the most hardworking and stubborn animals present on the Earth. A donkey is similar to a horse in appearance but is shorter in height. Donkeys are capable of moving smoothly in harsh and abrasive lands because of the presence of hooves – tiptoe that is covered with a dead protein called keratin. It is reported that more than 35 million donkeys are present in different regions of the world. However, their purposes in different regions are different, meaning that in developed or first-world countries, donkeys are primarily used as domesticated animals and are given the royal treatment, which is opposite to their treatment in underdeveloped countries.

In developing or underdeveloped countries, donkeys are used as pack animals – animals that are domesticated and trained by humans for carrying out different work like moving luggage from one place to another. Donkeys are mostly present in dusky shades. Their large eyes are black and are always wide open. In the scientific world, female and male donkeys have distinct names female donkeys are commonly called jennets or Jenny, whereas male donkeys are commonly called jackass or jack. A baby donkey who has not reached the age of puberty or maturity yet is known as a foal.

Donkeys have the potential to survive under harsh environmental conditions. It is seen that donkeys often lead a solitary life and never participate in making harem like some wild horses. However, donkeys do mark their home ranges after they reach puberty, and to inform other creatures about their home range, they make loud, high-pitched voices for approximately 20 to 25 seconds. The average pregnancy period in donkeys is around 11 to 12 months, and one foal is usually delivered in a single pregnancy. In comparison to wild horses, only 1.6 to 1.7 percent of donkeys give birth to twins.
