The American comic book publisher DC Comics, Inc. is the flagship of DC Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Discovery. The company produces Marvel Comics, DC Super Heroes, Batman, Superman, and the X-Men comic books. Founder and publisher Joseph R. Dutton was instrumental in establishing the company in 1940. After the demise of the Kitchen Sink Press, DC acquired Eisner’s work. Eisner’s character, Spider-Man, was featured in numerous DC comic books and he quickly rose through the ranks. While DC remained competitive, he also sought to divert attention from the rival Marvel Comics, which was marketing its superhero comics to college-aged adults. The company has continued to grow since its early years, and has a loyal fan base of primarily male readers. The company is a leader in the superhero genre and has a history of reinventing the mythology that accompanied it. In the early 1990s, DC expanded its reach by establishing the creator-owned Vertigo imprint. This imprint was a precursor of graphic novel imprints today, bringing the likes of Sandman, Preacher, and Fables to book shelves.

In the late 1930s, DC acquired the publishing rights to the Elfquest comic series. The series was previously published by Richard Pini. The publisher also launched an imprint called CMX that reprinted manga and comic books. In addition, DC temporarily acquired the North American publishing rights of Japanese manga creators. As the company’s focus on manga and comic books grew, its namesake changed to DC Comics. However, the company did not change its original name until 1977. The popularity of superhero comics declined during the 1940s, but the Superman series and Batman titles remained popular. The company also brought in many new characters, including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. This era of comics was known as the “Silver Age” of comic books. These new characters paved the way for the Silver Age of comic books. DC has also been a leader in the superhero genre since the beginning of the twentieth century.

The Mid-Eighties was a fruitful period for nontraditional comics in DC. Frank Miller wrote and drew Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (1986), while Alan Moore relaunched Swamp Thing (1984-87) and Watchmen (1986-87) deconstructed the superhero genre.
