Clownfish are best known for their orange-white stripes, alternately imprinted on their bodies. Clown Fish is famously known as Anemone Fish because clownfish obtain maximum energy from the fecal matter of their host anemones. In rare cases, they also obtain energy by digestion of the food, which is left undigested by their host sea anemones. Clownfish exhibit the phenomenon of hierarchy or dominance, meaning that one of the members is considered the undisputed king of a colony or family. In the case of clownfish, the dominant member is a fully developed female. One female and male release their ova and sperm into the deep water, and after fertilization occurs, these larvae are converted into hermaphrodites, which means that the same individual behaves like a male for half part of their life and then spends the rest of life like a female.

If due to some unfavorable circumstances, the dominant female perishes, then one of the males is transformed into a dominant female, and the cycle continues. The strongest and most fully developed juvenile has the capacity to undergo a sexual process. Other juveniles are not active when it comes to reproduction. At a time, female members of clownish have the capacity of laying 600 to 1500 eggs. Most of these eggs never develop into adult clownfish as most are assaulted by predators or are taken away by rapid water waves, or may become a victim of desiccation.

To ensure successful fertilization, females lay a maximum number of eggs together. For a week or two, male members safeguard the eggs from predators and maintain optimum temperature and humidity around the clutch. Female members rarely participate in taking care of the young ones who are just hatched out. The greater the amount of protection provided by the males, the greater the chances of survival of juveniles. It is witnessed that females occasionally have any role in parental care.
