About Chameleon
People often use the phrase in Urdu and Hindi language ‘Do not change your colors like Chameleons do,’ meaning sticking to your opinion. The reason for using the example of the Chameleon is that it has the inborn ability to adapt the color of the environment to help predators and capture food. Chameleons are a group of lizards that are widespread in Old World countries like Africa, Asia, and Europe. Up till now, more than 200 species of Chameleon have been explained by scientists. The body structure of Chameleon is quite different when compared to sister lizards.
The body of Chameleon is covered with horns or crusts. They possess sharp eyesight; their eyes can be moved out in multiple directions. Almost all the members have long, prehensile tails and swaying body movements. Another distinguished feature of Chameleon is the possession of zygodactylous feet that help carry out unique bait. Almost all family members prefer to stay in warm environments like deserts and rainforests of Southern Europe, Africa, and Asia. Scientists have introduced some members to Florida, California, and Hawaii. All members have kaleidoscopic and shiny skins filled with bright colors like dark green, orange, red, royal blue, and turquoise.
The fascinating part is that they can change the coloration of their skin according to environmental conditions. They usually undergo color change to camouflage themselves from the prey so that they can attack them from behind. The visible layer of the skin comprises different pigments followed by a deep layer filled with crystals. Other leading causes of changing their skin coloration involve environmental stressors like extreme temperatures, social communication, the attraction of mates, and successful mating. To express their aggression, they usually switch to bright colors as a single to intimidate the opponents.
