The Japanese manga Bungo Stray Dogs is illustrated and written by Japanese manga artist and writer Sango Harukawa and Kafka Asagiri, respectively. Since 2014, the Japanese manga has been serialized in a manga magazine named Young Ace, owned by Kadokawa. A famous Japanese animation studio called Bones is involved in the distribution and production of the television anime adaptation of the manga. The manga was adapted to the television animation series by the efforts of Takuya Igarashi, Junichiro Tamura, and Chiaki Kurakane, who served the series as the director and producers, respectively.

Japanese writer Yoji Enokido pens the Japanese animation series. Anime Limited and Crunchyroll were involved in releasing the manga in English in North America and England. The first episode of the television animation series was broadcasted in April 2016 on several Japanese channels, including CTC, Tokyo MX, KBS, JBS, BS 11, MTV, and SUN. The manga has been adapted to several light novels and animated movies; for example, an animated film named Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple got broadcast in 2018. The sequel to the original series was released in January 2021 under Bungo Stray Dogs Wan (January 2021 to March 2021). The central character of the animation series is a handsome young man named Atsushi Nakajima.

Atsushi lives in an orphanage, and one day the owners of the orphanage kick him out. He was roaming when he saw a man was drowning in the river; he immediately jumped to save his life. The man told him that his name was Osamu Dazai and that he was drowning; he was attempting suicide. In a deep conversation, Atsushi reveals that he has some supernatural powers meaning that he is the owner of some magical abilities. He told him to convert a human being into a white tiger. The conversation goes on, and they end up meeting different people who have some supernatural abilities like him, and the story continues.
