About Blackpink
Blackpink is a South Korean girl group formed by YG entertainment. The group debuted in August of 2016 and has only four members – Kim Ji-Soo (Jisoo), Kim Jennie (Jennie), Park Roseanna (Rose) and Lisa Monobal (Lisa). Of the four members, only Lisa is a foreigner, and she hails from Thailand. Despite being around for only a short time, Blackpink is currently one of the biggest K-pop bands in the world. They are the highest charting female Korean act on the Billboard Hot 100, the first female Korean group to get certifications from RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), BPI (British Photographic Industry) and ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association).
Blackpink’s success is unparalleled; not just for a Korean girl group, but worldwide. They have racked up accolades, billions of streams, commercial achievements and milestones that are unprecedented by any other girl group in the world. They have the most subscribers for a band on YouTube at 69 million, and are the most followed girl-group on Spotify. Noteworthy is the presidential nod they got from South Korea’s President, Moon Jae-in for pushing K-pop to the rest of the world. Expanding beyond the Korean scene, they have had guest appearances and collaborations on their songs and albums by western artists like Selena Gomez, Cardi B, and David Guetta. In January 2021, they had a live streamed concert held on their YouTube page. It recorded about 280,000 paid subscribers and was received positively.
Beyond music, one thing that has set Blackpink apart from other girl groups is their fashion inclusivity. They have served as ambassadors to many luxury brands as a group and individually. Jisoo has worked with Dior, Rose for Yves Saint Laurent, Jennie for Chanel and Lisa for Bulgari and Celine. As a group they have worked for Puma, Reebok, Dior Cosmetics, Louis Vuitton and Moonshot. Blackpink’s fanbase are called Blinks. This is a portmanteau of the words Black and Pink.
