If you’ve ever wanted to know more about the Japanese culture, you’ll find that the Samurai were some of the most well-equipped warriors in history. Their elaborate armor was considered an art form, and each piece served a specific purpose. Not only did the armor look intimidating, but it also made them more mobile and more agile. In addition, Samurai helmets often incorporated a mask to help protect them from enemies. One of the most interesting aspects of the Japanese culture is the way samurai reacted to the death of their masters. Samurai were supposed to be honorable, but some were not. The 47 Ronin were an example of this, as they were a group of hardhearted men that sought revenge for the death of their masters. In the 18th century, a daimyo named Naganori Asano was forced to commit seppuku after assaulting the daimyo Yoshinaka Kira.

In contrast to the Hollywood movies that portray the Samurai as the elite warrior class, the reality is much different. Even the most famous and popular samurai were not as strictly defined as you might think. In fact, more than two million samurai existed in Japan. And after the law was passed in 1588, they were the only class legally allowed to own weapons, and they tended to use two swords for combat. Aside from the sword, samurai also practiced a strict code of conduct called bushido, which is related to chivalry in European societies. These code of conduct was closely related to the bushido, or “way of the warrior,” which outlined the rules of conduct for a samurai. Ultimately, it made them a tough and stoic warrior. Sadly, there are very few surviving samurai today, so it is important to understand them to truly appreciate them.

As for the Samurai, it is important to understand their role in Japanese society. They were the kaihatsu-ryoshu of shieiden, which were privately owned lands directly governed by powerful families. As such, they were originally ‘armed planters’ meant to counter subservient serfs and interfering zuryo. However, as the centuries went on, classical theory became more accepted and even mainstream in the academic world. Tadashi ISHIMODA, a historian who took a different approach, focused on the samurai as reformers. While there were very few Western samurai in history, William Adams (1564-1620) and Jan Joosten (1606-1774) became the first Europeans to become samurai. The two men settled in Japan and became advisors to Tokugawa Ieyasu, which granted them the right to call themselves a samurai. However, this prestigious title came with a high price.
